Hey everyone! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
At that point, you might as well add one more zero and call it day.

Honestly my favorite part is that there’s a magazine in one of the pictures titled “How To Make it in America.” Perfection.

With the swap, this is about market for one of these. Actually, it might be a bit less than market. They go much higher. Why? IDK. (Rarity, maybe?)

That’s an ad for an ill-fated HBO show that was actually semi okay. Ironically, one episode features an over priced van which is insured as an art piece in order to perpetrate fraud.

Any respectable hipster’s trust fund can handle that.
![]() 03/14/2016 at 11:39 |

Oh really? I’ll have to check it out!
![]() 03/14/2016 at 11:40 |

Can’t be too sure of the shape it’s in, but if it’s fully sorted and ready to roll, that’s a $40-45K van, easy. $55K seems high.
Lot’s of nice parts on it. (bumpers, wheels, dual locker, etc..)
I looked at his listing on The Samba, and he said,
Strong AC (non-VW, goes w/ Ford Z-Tec motor).
So, that means that the compressor is non-VW. Everything else, including those 40+ feet of hoses is all VW

That’s about right. Engine swap, Westy, and Syncro are all worth their weight in gold.

At that point can't you spend a bit more and get a brand new Mercedes sprinter 4x4?
![]() 03/14/2016 at 12:13 |
|
Hell, a brand new 2016 base-model 4x4 Sprinter starts at $44k, that leaves you $11,000 to kit it out with cool stuff.

agreed. it’s just insanity. there is no other explanation.
![]() 03/14/2016 at 12:17 |

Yup, I choose that option

If you haven’t seen this documentary , watch it.
And sure, these things are iconic, they are fascinating little death traps. I’d love to have one. But 55 grand? No mileage listed that I saw, but 10K on a new? rebuilt? engine? If diamonds come out of the exhaust on startup, maybe. Otherwise CEEEEEEE PEEEEEE! What’s it worth, really? 25 grand tops?

What the market will bear and such...
Now that Delicas and Hi-Aces are becoming legal to import, I’m pretty much over most VW vans.

I love that snorkel! So adorable.

A guy I sometimes ride MTB’s with mentioned that he’s got a Syncro being built by a shop in Ca. He casually mentioned that he’s got over $80k into it. If it was anyone else I’d call BS, but this guys has a lot of money and went into all of the neat things he’d paid them to do to it....
I hope he uses it, but I have a feeling it will just sit in a garage somewhere.

That’s not even the most expensive I’ve seen. I live near GoWesty and they’ve sold them for more than $75k. Just nuts. Now everyone with a rusty wreck thinks it’s worth $20k. Even a decent daily driver tin-top is over $5k now.

I know the guy who made that movie! His Bug Movie just came out this past month.
I’m also a total VW homer (I own two Beetles, and used to have a ‘68 Westy), and I still don’t get it.

I want to see that Bug movie now ... wonder if there’s a way to get it? The Bus was a great documentary, better than that Mustang documentary I watched earlier in the month.

How about a lot of these people are high and it just hasn’t been passed our way yet?
![]() 03/14/2016 at 14:35 |

Even high off-my-ass I would never pay that much for one of these things. As a mater of fact if I were high as a kite (we’re talking marijuana here, like the neo-hippies who think these are worth it) I would be
MORE
likely to fall down in an uncontrollable laughing fit at this.

One Westy Syncro and a lifetime supply of Nutella. One Westy Syncro and 40,000 scratcher tickets. One Westy Syncro and a few gold bars. One Westy Syncro a kilo of Bolivian booger sugar and a weeks worth of Strippers. There has to be something included in that Westy to sweeten the deal.

Totally. Judging from the ones for sale in Canada, they’re cheap too.
And they hold their own pretty well off-road:

I just saw one for sale in Oregon on Ebay, with a Subie swap, started at 14k. No idea what it will sell for.

I did MAJOR rust work on a syncro vanagon of the same colour, it had 300,000 km was bought new in Quebec, then went back to Germany for awhile before ending up out west here. The owner has more cool german cars than you can shake a stick at, and that one’s his baby. Those who like them, like them a lot.

it’s now powered by a subaru svx flat six and will burn all 4 tires up to about 85 km/h (have not witnessed this personally). but probably peppier than the wasserboxer he took out.

I’m a VW man myself (two Beetles and a 68 Westy - RIP), but I can’t conceive paying $55k for anything short of a Hebmüller. And I’d probably be short quite a few grand on that anyway.

I’ve worked on many an aircooled vw, they’re neat, but I wouldn’t want to crash one. (so much Ghia lead work in a karmann ghia)

My Westy went to a friend, and then was demolished in a rear-end collision (thankfully).

yeah, that was best-case for a crash, being able to see the headlight buckets from inside is disheartening. -73 and up actually have a crumple zone and lots of bumper, but still sketchy.
